Post  mrdenton Tue Sep 09, 2008 4:44 pm

Members may be interested to know that this coming Saturday, September 13, Roy Stockdill will be speaking to the Family History Section of the Yorkshire Archaeological Society.

The subject is: "The Life & Crimes of Mary Bateman, the Yorkshire Witch."

The talk concerns one of Leeds' most infamous characters, Mary Bateman, a bogus medium and confidence trickster who was hanged at York in 1809 for murder. Roy has been researching this fascinating story for a number of years and has had articles published about Mary Bateman in magazines.

The lecture takes place at 2.0 p.m. at the YAS headquarters: Claremont, 23 Clarendon Rd, Leeds LS2 9NZ. Claremont is close to the city centre and the University of Leeds.

Non members may be charged a small fee.

For those of you who may not know Roy, he is a professional genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer and has produced the Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History on the following web site:
