Barnsley Workhouse Empty Barnsley Workhouse

Post  sjb Wed May 20, 2009 2:06 pm

Hi, I'm new to the forum, and quite new to researching my family history. I have found out that my gg grandparents John and Mary Ann Davis (nee Bacchus) died in Barnsley workhouse around the 1880's. I don't seem to be able to find out any info on inmates there, when they died, why they were in there etc. i do think they got married at the parish church, Sheffield in 1856. Their son Benjamin was born in Northumberland in 1835 ish!! I would love to know how to get some more information about them or how to go about finding information. Thanks Sue

nora cady was born 16/4/1866 barnsley
nora and benjamin had 11 children the first 5 were born in barnsley and the rest in earlsetown, lanc
do you know what happened in 1891 ( their 3 oldest children aged 5,3,1, died in january of that year, and 4 more died in 1898,1900,1901,1904
alice ann davis (my grandmother) b18/1/1891 - died 1973

it such a sad story isn't it? I wonder why they ended up in the workhouse, it is a story I want to follow up on. I am hoping I can come to barnsley in the summer. My sister and i are in touch with cousins in canada and australia who are also researching our family history, I will certainly tell them about your info and how quickly you responded. We are all new to this and are really hooked! It seems we have half our family from yorkshire and the other half from lancashire!! thanks again sue
